Andy Winings claims 2010 GCRO title

Marion, Iowa // July 25, 2010

Andy Winings of Brownsburg, Ind., won the 12th Annual Greater Cedar Rapids Open, shooting a 12-under par 204 to hold off Greg O’Mahony of Tequesta, Fla., by one shot.

Winings posted a 1-under par 71 in Sunday’s final round to win his second professional event and earn the $20,000 first-place prize. The former University of Kentucky star also won the 2009 Waterloo Open.

While Sunday’s score was his highest of the tournament, Winings did finish with eight straight pars, something his closest challengers couldn’t do. O’Mahony went birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey on his last four holes for a 70 and a 205 total. Steve Friesen of Scottsdale, Ariz., bogeyed 16 and 18 for a 72 and a 206 total, good for third.

Winings began the tournament in style with a tourney-low 8-under par 64 on Friday, a round that included six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 12th hole. He followed that up with a 3-under 69 in Saturday’s second round that included four birdies and a bogey and was tied with P.J. Kolosvary and Chris Thompson for the lead after 36 holes of the 54-hole event.

Longtime pro golfer Ben Bates won the Senior Division by one shot over Dave Rummells, and Hiawatha’s Nate Dunn won his third GCRO Amateur title. There were a total of 104 pro entrants.
