Marion, Iowa // July 13, 2012

(Marion, Iowa) – (July 12, 2012) – Planning for the 14th Annual Greater Cedar Rapids Open at Hunters Ridge Golf Course in Marion, Iowa, is under way and volunteers are needed to help make this not-for-profit event a success.

The three-day tournament, which features aspiring men’s golf professionals, senior professionals and amateurs from around the world, is set to begin at 7 a.m., Friday, July 27. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, July 29.

Volunteers will receive a Greater Cedar Rapids Open T-Shirt and are needed during the tournament in the following areas: caddies, hospitality, flagpersons, spotters, standard bearers, refreshments, etc.

Since its inception in 1999, the GCRO has awarded more than $100,000 to various non-profit organizations throughout the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor. Those groups include Camp Courageous, the Salvation Army, the Cedar Rapids Optimist Junior Golf Association, and The Boys and Girls Clubs.

This year, the GCRO has extended its mission statement and has committed to raising awareness about the prevention of melanoma – the most dangerous type of skin cancer. A portion of the funds raised through the tournament will be directed to The University of Iowa Foundation to benefit melanoma research at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The GCRO tournament helped launch the professional careers of 2007 Masters Champion Zach Johnson of Cedar Rapids, 2010 Puerto Rico Open Champion Derek Lamely of Fort Myers, Fla., 2012 Puerto Rico Open Champion George McNeill of Omaha, Neb., and PGA Tour Player Gary Christian of England.
